What drives the price
Where the money goes on a mezzanine project
Steel and decking usually account for around half of a storage mezzanine's cost. Load rating is the biggest single lever: moving from 350 kg/m² to 1,000 kg/m² roughly doubles the steel weight per square metre, and a taller deck adds column section on top of that.
On office and retail decks the balance shifts. Fire protection, partitioning, ceilings, lighting and accessible access frequently cost more than the structure itself, which is why a fitted office deck can be three times the rate of a plain storage floor of the same size.
Smaller projects carry proportionally more fixed cost — design, calculations, crane hire, mobilisation and building control do not shrink with the deck — so the rate per square metre falls noticeably above about 500 m².
- How accurate is the mezzanine cost calculator?
- It is budget guidance built from typical UK installed rates, and it is normally within about 15% of a surveyed quotation for a standard project. Slab condition, restricted access, steel price movement and the agreed fire strategy are the usual reasons a final figure differs.
- What is included in the price shown?
- The estimate covers the steel structure and decking, edge protection, the staircases and gates you select, any add-ons you tick, installation and site works, and the design, structural calculations and building control submission. It excludes VAT, racking, shelving and any planning application fees.
- Why does fire protection add so much?
- One-hour protection means a fire-rated ceiling across the whole deck, casing to every column and beam, protected staircases and often alarm and sprinkler changes. On an office or retail deck it is rarely optional, so it is worth budgeting for from the start.
- Do I have to give my details to see a price?
- No. The figure updates as you change the specification and nothing is required from you. Contact details are only needed if you want the estimate emailed over with an outline specification.
